Real Estate Investment Trusts - 90% Payout Translates into High Yield Returns

Real Estate Investment Trusts (REIT) make for excellent high yield investments since they pay out 90% of their income to investors. They are structured to intentionally optimize returns net of taxes to investors. In return for the special tax treatment they return, REITs must pay out 90% of their income to investors. Often times, REITs will yield anywhere from 5%-10%. Investors would be wise to investigate any REITs in excess of 11% since the market may be pricing in some sort of reduction in income or net asset value of the trust.
